Finger licking finger food: Starting your baby on finger food

From around eight months onwards you can start to introduce finger foods.  Finger food is a great way to give your little one a bit of independence whilst also giving your 'here comes the aeroplane' routine a bit of a rest too!

Babies often find finger food more interesting than spoon food and importantly, it helps them develop their hand-eye coordination.  And don't worry if your baby doesn't have many teeth yet, this won’t stop them from chewing with just their gums.  Just always ensure they are seated and supervised to make sure they don’t choke on anything.

Fun finger foods to start with include:

  • Slices of soft fruits such as melon or banana
  • Soft cooked veggie pieces such as carrot or pumpkin

Once they get the hang of it you could try:

  • Soft toast or bread fingers (soldiers!)
  • Small portions of cheese
  • Cooked pasta
  • Soft cooked chicken slices
